Walmart’s Director of Machine Learning on the future of the domain
Tomer Lancewicki, Director of Machine Learning at Walmart, spoke to CTech at Calcalist and Bank Leumi’s Tech & Invest conference in Miami about the future of AI.
“The main use cases today for AI will be around text and images,” says Walmart Director of Machine Learning Tomer Lancewicki to CTech at Calcalist and Bank Leumi’s Tech & Invest conference in Miami. “I would expect that we would start to see more impact within other domains - supply chains and in basic research.”
Lancewicki believes that in the future we will see fewer “Einstein types with the next theory of relativity” and instead researchers with a “well defined objective they’re trying to solve, and the challenge will be how can we build an AI system that can solve that particular problem,” says Lancewicki.
For example, he referred to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Google DeepMind Co-founder and CEO Sir Demis Hassabis and Google DeepMind Director Dr. John Jumper who developed an AI system that predicts the structure of proteins. “What’s interesting about this, is that they won the Nobel Prize but they didn’t solve the problem - they designed an AI system that was able to solve that problem.”
